Andi grew up with a broad interest in sustainability. His bachelor’s study allowed him to learn the principles and fundamentals of various biobased product manufacturing. Opportunities opened for him to dive deep into one of the possible bio-based products, so he chose to continue his learning journey by pursuing a master\u2019s degree in biobased materials at Maastricht University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeking more expertise in sustainability, Andi joined a PhD in the field of sustainability at Maastricht University. Achieving a sustainable chemical industry in the Netherlands is challenging since many products, such as fertilizers, plastics, and vaccine carrier proteins are mostly of fossil origin. Moreover, novel technologies are needed to speed the transition up while maintaining economic and safety viability. This project (Integral Safe by Design Plasma Acrylonitrile Production<\/a>) is going to explore a possible new approach to the production of acrylonitrile, a common building block, that is conventionally manufactured using non-renewable feedstocks and involves the storage and transportation of toxic and flammable substances. The questions revolve around whether the plasma approach is a safer and more sustainable alternative. With collaboration with other partners, LCA will be performed to investigate the environmental footprints for this novel process compared to the conventional production route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
